What can an author do with a

YOUTUBE CHANNEL?

YouTube is the perfect way to connect with fans and followers. Video is a stellar medium. It gives readers a chance to see who you are, listen to how you think, and learn what you're all about. I think of it as a behind-the-scenes peek at the person and the process.

There has never been a better time to launch a platform than right now. The digital tools and social networks are so accessible that the barrier to entry is practically zero.

You don’t need a film crew or a studio, an agent or a contract. You can connect directly to your audience and interact with them up close in ways never dreamed possible. Your own programming, your own message, your own vision can be as simple as a smartphone and your inborn authenticity.

The world is changing and more and more, the creators are leading the charge. So start crafting your message, dust off your megaphone, and let’s get to work!

My Creative Inspiration

I owe huge debts to Henry Miller and Anais Nin for their raw emotionality. Chuck Palahniuk, Brett Easton Ellis, and Elmore Leonard showed me writing with an edge. I remain in awe of Donna Tartt for her command of the language. And my imagination was molded in formative years by the likes of Ray Bradbury, J.R.R. Tolkien and Samuel R. Delany.

But my biggest influence hands down has always been Stephen King. While all the kids were reading Jane Eyre in 7th grade comp, I was hiding in the back with a huge copy of IT, wondering how on Earth the Losers Club stood a chance against Pennywise. Pet Sematary still gives me chills and if I ever have a son, I will likely name him Roland. I am a shameless, adoring fan and there are nods to King’s universe in both my novels. He remains my favorite storyteller.

My Spiritual Inspiration

From the classic texts like the Tao de Ching and the Chuang Tzu to more modern interpretations like The Secret of the Golden Flower, Taoism has been the backbone of my journey. Teachers like Alan Watts, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Paulo Coelho reassured me on the path. From the Western science end of the spectrum, the works of Jill Bolte Taylor, Michael Talbot, and Brian Weiss opened my eyes to the broader universe. And Advaita greats like Sri Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta Maharaj helped bring me into awareness – while the writings of Greg Goode helped to stabilize it.

But the broadest respect and true, soul-level love is reserved for Baba Ram Dass. Both his path and his honest reflection of the teachings shined through at every stage of his journey. Be Here Now provided a comfort that nothing else could provide after my first experiments in consciousness. Ram Dass said: we’re all just walking each other home. Of all I’ve learned about spirituality, that statement remains the most profound, and the most beautiful.
